Where to Watch Detroit Auto Show Highlights Online
It’s a car lover’s dream. The North American International Auto Show, better known as the Detroit Auto Show, kicked off January 14, 2013 with a two-day media preview. That’s when automakers showed off their newest models, as well as concept cars that offer a glimpse of the future.
More than 50 vehicles made their debut at the show, which will open to the general public on January 19, 2013 and run through January 27, 2013. If you want to get an early peek, or if you can’t make it to the Motor City, there are plenty of options for finding online video highlights of the car show.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR AT THE DETROIT AUTO SHOW
The unveiling of the 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray was easily the most anticipated event of the Detroit Auto Show. The first new version of the iconic sports car since 2005 is completely redesigned, with features that echo the classic 1960s model while including modern materials like carbon fiber body panels and an aluminum chassis. The new Stingray also sports a 6.2-liter V8 engine that puts out 450 horsepower. Get a closer look at it in the video below Edmunds.com.
Luxury brands also made a big showing. BMW unveiled its 4 Series concept, the successor to its 3 Series two-door. The near-production-ready coupe includes satin-finish aluminum bumpers and trim, as well as twin circular LED headlamps.
New technology played a big role at the Detroit Auto Show. Electric car maker Tesla previewed its Model X concept crossover with “Falcon Wing” rear doors. Infiniti showed off its Q50 sports sedan that marks the debut of two tech advancements: Direct Adaptive Steering, which allows control of the tire angle and steering inputs, and Active Lane Control, which uses a small camera fixed to the top of the rear view mirror to correct unintended lane drifts. Infiniti added another touch of innovation to its presentation: a performance by Cirque du Soleil.
The 2013 Detroit Auto Show is expected to be a big one for pickup trucks. The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickup will make their debuts. Both models offer new versions of GM’s MyLink and IntelliLink connectivity systems. Also highly anticipated was Ford’s “Atlas” concept — the next generation of the immensely popular F-150 pickup. Changes include LED headlights, an automatic air dam to minimize wind resistance, and improved fuel economy.
WHERE TO WATCH DETROIT AUTO SHOW VIDEOS ONLINE
Of course, it’s more fun to see these new vehicles. Just as viewers had several options for finding online video footage of the recent Consumer Electronics Show where Audi debuted its Connect car concept (a car that drives itself), you’ll find plenty of video coverage online of the Detroit Auto Show. Car buying guides, including Edmunds.com and Autoguide.com’s YouTube page offer in-depth first looks at the hottest cars. General news publications, such as the Wall Street Journal, also provide some video highlights from the car show.
You can also find footage from the car makers themselves. Chevrolet has the lowdown on the new Corvette Stingray on its website, while BMW TV offers an inside look at the German auto maker’s Detroit car show highlights.
