Add to your list of issues with the new Windows 10 operating system the curious fact that it does not come with DVD playback software. So how do you play a DVD on Windows 10? Sure, there may be a DVD drive built into the side of your new or upgraded Windows 8 machine – but when you pop a DVD into that drive, you might only get a whirring sound for about 45 seconds. Unless your computer’s manufacturer installed DVD software on your machine (some Dell laptops come pre-installed with CyberLink PowerDVD, for instance), you need to get yourself a Windows 10 compatible DVD player. You don’t need to run out and find this in a store, you just need to do a DVD player download online.
The good news is that there are plenty of DVD player downloads available online. Microsoft says they removed the DVD playback functionality because no one watches DVDs anymore; these days we stream movies online. Additionally, Microsoft wanted Windows 10’s design to be consistent across Windows 10 phones and Surface tablets. Another reason for killing off DVD playback, though, is that producing DVD decoding software requires paying royalties. Plenty of software manufacturers do pay this royalty, though.

Once you’ve downloaded RealPlayer Plus, you can play a DVD by doing the following:
- Open RealPlayer Plus
- Insert the DVD into your DVD drive.
- Click the Library tab at the center top of your screen. The Library screen will appear.
- Click the CD / DVD button on the left pane. The DVD track screen will appear.
- Click on the DVD chapter you wish to watch. If there is only one chapter listed, click on 1. DVD inserted to begin DVD playback.
- Enjoy watching your DVDs, those things that supposedly no one watches anymore!
Should you prefer the old school File menu way of doing things in Windows 10, you have that option, as well. You can play a DVD using RealPlayer Plus with the File menu by doing the following:
- Click the RealPlayer Plus icon in the top left. A File menu will appear.
- Select File. Another menu list will appear to the right.
- Select Open from the new menu list. The Open dialog box will appear.
- Press the Browse button. Your file library will appear.
- Next to Look In: select your DVD drive.
- Select the chapter you want to watch, and enjoy the show.
Boom! Your Windows 10 compatible DVD player problems are solved.

love real player
realplayer for windows 8 does not work. I downloaded it and followed all directions for both ways to access the dvd. realplayer said it needed to download new software, and no updates were available. so I still can’t watch the dvd and have uninstalled realplayer. obviously the free download is not supported. guess you get what you pay for
DVD playback works best in RealPlayer Plus with the Plus DVD playback components installed. On computers without the Plus DVD playback components, DVD playback may not work, or may play only the video with no audio. In these cases, to play DVDs in RealPlayer you will need to upgrade to RealPlayer Plus and install the Plus DVD playback components.
I have downloaded various videos and clips via Real Player the free version. I now wish to change my laptop does that mean I will lose everything I have saved? How does it work as I note that when I click on real player my library always shows up. Please help.
When you import music/video files to RealPlayer library, RealPlayer won’t save the actual file in the database it only saves the location of the files. If you are going to change your laptop, you need to transfer all the files from your old laptop to new one. Once you transfer all the files, you can install RealPlayer free version and import them to RealPlayer Library.

It is big problem – new Windows 8 does not come with DVD playback software. Users must look for appropriate program in web. What a pity!
I’ve done everything and it says “download RealPlayer Plus” And yes I downloaded the free version because I’m not going to pay $50 just to play a $20 DVD.
It said I can download it for “free” but I have to sign up for a bunch of stuff that will make me pay

I like Real Player. A lot. Have had it for years. But now there is trouble on my HP620 laptop. This PC was preinstalled with Windos 7 Home Premium and Real Player worked fine then. Now I have replaced the harddrive and installed Windows 7 Pro folllowed by Windows 8.1. (dual boot) and then I installed Real Player 16+ on Windows 8.1. After that I signed in to Real Player, inserted a DVD in the optical drive and clicked on “Play CD or DVD” in the Real Player menu, and then I get this error: “A general error has occured – unspecified error – More information is available at the RealNetworks Custumer Support Site”, There are 2 buttons in this box: “OK” and “More Info”. If I click on “More Info” I get a page with solutions but when I click on the links on that page, I get “this page is unavailable”. If I launch Windows 7 instead, same DVD plays fine with Windows Media Player.
To make DVD playback work on Windows 8 I probably need to install codecs, any suggestions is welcome because I havn’t got a clue….

I downloaded personal movies I made & you hih=jacked it from me. I wanted to save it on a dvd.
I can not do that . You want me to pay you $35 to upgrade then I will be able to save on a dvd.
That is a dirty trick. I want my videos back. I am not paying you $35.00 to retreave them.
real player will not let me ttransfer my videos to itunes, windows media player, dvd, f: drive etc.

What are U going to do about this. I do not have $35.00 to get your upgrade. I have caner & I need that video of myself for my kids. My medications for cancer is sometimes $550 for 14 pill & that is #7 days only. The rest of the pills are costly also. HELPPPPPPPPPPP
Sorry for the inconvenience! RealPlayer has no control over the files you have in RealPlayer Library. You can locate the file in your hard drive and transfer it to any player you want.
To locate the file.
>Open RealPlayer
>Go to RealPlayer Library
>Go to videos
>Right Click on the video and locate file
>You will get a window (where the file is stored in your computer)
Then you can import it to any player you want.
I have no drive on my new PC so I use an external drive to see DVDs. I would like to copy the DVD files to my hard drive so I can see them on the road w/o lugging the external drive. Will RealPlayer play the files from my hard drive?
RealPlayer does not support ripping, or burning a copy of, a copy-protected (commercially-produced) DVD disc. DVDs created on a home computer can generally be copied. However, RealPlayer will play the files which you have saved in your hard drive.

I’d like to purchase RealPlayer Plus, but have a question: In the instructions above, one of the steps says “Select the chapter you want to watch” — Does this mean that I won’t be able to get to the main menu on a DVD? For example, if it contains several episodes of a show but also has a “Play All” option, will I not be able to use that “Play all” option? Secondly, will RealPlayer Plus work with a computer that does not have an internal DVD drive, only a USB-connected external one? Thank you.
1. Usually when you play DVD’s in RealPlayer Plus, it will play the complete DVD. Additionally you can also choose the chapters which you would like to watch.
2. Yes, RealPlayer will support external DVD drives.

I have ended up with the new supposedly fantastic windows 8 (which I totally hate with a passion!!!)
I’m in hospital and thought that watching a couple of DVDs would help pass the time, but as you have noted on your website, the handy jazzy new windows 8 has not enabled this service anymore.
I have thus tried to purchase the realplayer plus, but cannot get my cards accepted. There is no reason for this, thus I wanted to know if you can help me.
I have just been told that my realplayer plus purchase has been confirmed, but I seem to have realplayer cloud and realplayer installed on my computer. I cannot find the realplayer plus anywhere. Everytime I try to play a DVD I get told to purchase the realplayer plus software. I obviously do not want to purchase this again. So What can I do. I have an account, but it offers no insight into my previous purchase just again an offer to pay and download the plus version.

After installing these features, you can watch DVD’s using RealPlayer.

Playing DVD’s is a premium feature of RealPlayer Plus and requires sign in. Please follow these steps:
1. Open RealPlayer.
2. Click on the down arrow to the right of the RealPlayer logo (upper left corner of the player).
3. Select Sign in.
4. Enter the email address and password associated with the account.
5. You will be prompted to install the premium features.
At this point the logo in the upper left corner should indicate RealPlayer Plus and the premium features should be available. Enjoy!
After installing premium features, the simplest way to start playing a DVD is to insert a DVD into a DVD-capable drive installed on your computer. If RealPlayer is selected as your default player for DVDs, then it will automatically open and start playing the DVD. Otherwise, you will need to open RealPlayer and select Play CD or DVD from the Play menu.

Well I jus downloaded the RealPlayer to my windows8 computer and it did not work, but really I jus think its Windows8! Windows8 doesn’t really do much of anything and its hard to navigate. but if you have any other ideas for me or can tell me in full directions what to do ill try it, but I don’t want to buy anything that isn’t going to work on this computer. I really want to watch this DVD I just bought yesterday!

I have a Toshiba laptop running windows 8.1 I also have a portable hard drive and am going away and want to download my dvds onto the portable hard drive. please can you tell me how to do that and what free program I may need? thank you

RealPlayer does not have an option to rip a DVD’s, but you can save CD tracks to the library. Therefore, I request you to use other software to copy DVD’s. You can use Google search to locate the DVD ripping software.
