How to Share Videos Stored on Your Phone

You’ve shot a bunch of nice video clips on your smartphone. Maybe you even have a ton of videos of your family stored on your phone that you’d like to share with your mother, a few friends, or maybe even the entire world. What do you do?

While sharing photos seems simple enough, far too many of us feel like the videos we capture on a phone are trapped there. Fortunately, video sharing from camera phones for free has become easier as more tools have become available to facilitate sharing in a variety of ways.

The most direct way to share videos is by email or via text. The process is similar for both Android and Apple iPhone. In your camera’s gallery (it’s called “camera roll” in iOS), select a video, click Share, choose Mail (or Messages if you wish to send as a SMS), then enter your recipients. It’s easy enough to do, however be warned sending big files (aka video files) can be costly (if you’re not sending the email over a WiFi network or have a limited text plan) and the quality of the video can be downgraded.

Of course, there’s more to video sharing than sending clips to specific individuals or groups. You may also want to upload your clips to video-sharing sites.

The free YouTube mobile app makes it a cinch to upload videos to the site. Whether you use an iPhone or an Android device, follow the same steps as you would for sending a video via email. Instead of choosing Mail, select YouTube. From there, you can create a title and description, set the privacy settings (private, unlisted, or public), and add tags to make your videos more searchable. The same applies to Vimeo if you download that site’s free mobile app for both iOS and Android.

Social networking sites have become an important hub for posting videos. Thanks to various mobile apps, sharing videos to these sites from your phone is a snap.

The Google Plus app includes a feature called Instant Upload, which automatically syncs the photos and videos you capture with your Android device or iPhone to a private album in your Google Plus account. By enabling the Instant Upload feature, you never have to worry about uploading videos to your account. To share the videos with other Google Plus members, click the grey checkbox at the top of the screen to select one or more clips. Next, click the checkbox on each clip you’d like to share, then select the Share button to share publicly, with your Circles, or with specific Google Plus members.

Android and iPhone users can use the Share option in the camera menu to upload video to various social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr. Android users can also set up the camera app to upload videos automatically either to Facebook or Flickr. But you can only set it to upload videos to one site at a time. What if you want to upload to multiple sites simultaneously?

Autodesk’s Socialcam free video sharing camera phone app lets you upload files from your camera’s video library and share them with multiple sites simultaneously. You can set the app to share clips to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, and others, as well as email and SMS. Even when you shoot videos within the app, Socialcam saves the clips to the iPhone’s camera roll or Android’s gallery (you’d be surprised at how many third-party apps don’t do this).

Socialcam is also its own video-focused social network, so you can share with other Socialcam users and invite others to join. You can also include hashtags and add filters, like Kodak (that vintage look), noir (that soft black-and-white deal), and bokeh (that points-of-light-out-of-focus thingy). It’s available for iOS and Android, and you can sign up through your Facebook or Twitter account.

Another option for simultaneous sharing is Qik (pronounced “quick”). Like Socialcam, you can share videos from your gallery to Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, as well as WordPress, Blogger, and Tumblr blogs. Qik’s twist is that you can also live stream video from your mobile device to Facebook and Twitter. Once you upload your videos to Facebook you can always save them in your RealPlayer library.
