The world’s longest-running tennis tournament returns again this year with the 2013 U.S. Open. From Monday, August 29 to Monday, September 9, the biggest names in international tennis will lob it out on the hardcourt at the prestigious Grand Slam tennis tournament in Queens, NY. Tennis fans can volley back and forth between several different livestreams to watch the U.S. Open online.

A free 2013 U.S. Open livestream is available at US Open Live. To be clear US Open Live does not provide every single match at the U.S. Open – but with more than 200 matches at Flushing Meadows’ biggest courts, odds are pretty good that your favorite player or most-anticipated match-up will be streamed at US Open Live. Cable subscribers can catch top U.S. Open live matches and on demand replays at WatchESPN.com. Tablet and smartphone viewers can follow the U.S. Open with the US Open on the Go app, which will stream live video on Labor Day Weekend (Aug. 31 – Sept. 2) and Finals Weekend (Sept. 7-9), plus daily video highlights on demand. For those who prefer to listen to the matches being played there is also free access to the U.S. Open radio coverage that will be streaming for free at USOpen.org.

The U.S. Open slams its way to the Finals this week, with matches every day and the Finals on Sunday. Several free streams allow you to watch the 2012 U.S. Open live and not miss a single swing, bounce, or grunt. Catching all the action on the hardcourt isn’t hard, as multiple websites will stream the U.S. Open live, for free. If you weren’t watching last week’s developments on the U.S. Open hardcourt, here’s what you’ve missed so far: Andy Roddick announced his retirement and has not lost yet in what he says is his swan song tournament. Kim Clijsters also announced she would retire after this U.S. Open, and subsequently she was retired from the event with a second-round loss. Venus Williams made an early second round exit, but Serena Williams has been advancing easily. Top-ranked men’s player Roger Federer remains on top with a solid tournament so far, and top-ranked women’s player Victoria Azarenka – yes, Maria Sharapova has slipped in the rankings – is still swinging. Rafael Nadal pulled out of the tournament with a knee injury, perhaps paving the way for the retiring Roddick or former No. 1 Novak Djokovic

Tennis matches begin daily at 11 a.m. EST, with evening matches at 7 p.m. EST every day through Saturday, September, 8, 2012. Only two matches are scheduled for Sunday (9/9) – the Men’s Final, and the Women’s Doubles Final, both scheduled for 12 Noon ET.

You can watch the U.S. Open live online for free at USOpen.org. While the Junior (players under age 18) matches are not being streamed, all of the adult Singles and Doubles 2012 U.S. Open Tennis matches are available live or on demand. The free U.S. Open livestream is as impressive as any paid streaming service, with a high-definition (HD) broadband video player that offers your choice of up to six different live matches. A picture-in-picture features allows you to watch two matches simultaneously, while complete match statistics can be pulled up or minimized on the screen at any time.

Unlike the free Wimbledon livestream, each day’s full-length matches are available on demand after they’ve been finished. Finding the completed match, though, is a little tricky. You can watch those matches by accessing the stream for the court on which the match was played, then navigating back on the status bar at the bottom of the screen. So watching a match that has already been completed requires you to know the court on which the match occured. White dots on the status bar indicate the start and end points for previous matches played on that court, helping you find the tennis match you want to watch. Only the current day’s matches are available to watch on demand at USOpen.org.

Previous days’ U.S. Open matches are available on demand at WatchESPN.com, along with webcasts of live matches involving the top-ranked players. The ESPN webcast is free, but only if you have a current cable television subscription from a participating cable provider. Viewers must log-in through a cable subscription verification process, similar to the log-in required to watch the NBC Olympics webcast. Once logged in, you can watch live 2012 US Open tennis matches under the Live Now tab, or completed matches on demand under the Replay tab. WatchESPN.com’s video archive of completed matches goes all the way back to the early qualifying rounds, but does not contain every single match played.

TENNIS ON A SMALLER SCREEN: FREE MOBILE APPS

Mobile device users have access to a free U.S. Open app for Apple iOS devices or a U.S. Open app for Android, but the live video features are limited. Live matches were only available to watch during Labor Day weekend and will be available to those who want to watch the Finals live this upcoming Weekend (September 8th and 9th). There is no live weekday video of 2012 U.S. Open tennis matches available on the U.S. Open app, only video highlights of completed matches and live radio coverage of the day’s marquee matches. Mobile users can see live, real time scores and match results, and also set Push Alerts to find out when favorite players are about to win or lose. That way you can tune-in to see the end of the match if it’s happening this weekend.
